One Man's Story

John Lehew has traveled around the world photographing wildlife, scenic and cultural images for more than 40 years.  His travels have taken him to more than 60 countries on all 7 continents and he has sailed on 4 of the world's oceans.  John has spent considerable time observing and photographing wildlife, traveling the world looking for unique images, and capturing the energy and color of local markets. Being a former U. S. Merchant Marine he has a passion for the sea and the people who sail upon her.

John has spent much of his career doing environmental clean up work and has run some of the largest and most complex nuclear decommissioning and environmental remediation projects in the world.  He has degrees in Marine Engineering, Nuclear Engineering and Ecological Engineering. His background and experiences give him an insight not only into the natural wonders of the world, but also into our place within it. John currently lives in the mountains of Colorado with his with Kathy and they continue to spend time traveling around the world.

Footnote: Yes. The photo I chose here is my younger self with less wrinkles and more hair, but a smile on my face because I am in the field with my Canon A1 and Canon 500mm f4.5 L when I still shot film.

My Gear:

  • Canon EOS 5D MarkIV, 90D, 80D, & 70D...Canon EOS3...Canon A1
  • Canon 100-400mm go to lens for birds and other wildlife
  • Canon 600mm, 500mm, & 300mm for wildlife
  • Canon 70-200mm travel, markets
  • Canon 18-135mm ever day travel lens

As most photographers of my age we started out with film and eventually switched to digital. I sometimes feel I was a better photographer when I shot only film and with a manual camera. My first trip around the world I had to be very careful only traveling with 80 rolls of 36 exposure, 64ASA Kodachrome slide film for a 7 month backpacking trip. That was only 2880 shots. I've shot twice that many images on each my most recent trips; a month on safari in Africa, an expedition cruise to Antarctica and birding in Central America.
